A flexible and energetic musician, clarinetist Matt Rockwell (he/him) has enjoyed a dynamic career through a variety of performance opportunities. Rockwell served as second clarinetist of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic for the 2021-2022 season, under the direction of Maestro David Bowden. Rockwell has also performed as a clarinetists in various orchestras across the country such as the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, and the Evansville Philharmonic. Rockwell will also be traveling with the University of Texas at Austin Wind Ensemble to perform at Carnegie Hall in the Spring of 2024.

A highly in-demand teacher, Rockwell has taught excellent students throughout Virginia, Indiana, and Texas. Rockwell’s students regularly place in district, region, and all-state ensembles, and has had students participate in the NAfME National Honor Band. Rockwell’s students also regularly earn top honors at various solo and ensemble contests.

Rockwell is also on staff at the Indiana Clarinet Experience (ICE). This summer intensive clarinet festival is located on the campus of Purdue University in Fort Wayne Indiana, and is designed to offer top quality education to students of a variety of experience levels.

Rockwell began his musical studies at the age of 3 on piano. He quckly developed a passion for clarinet at the age of 10 when he started playing it in his elementary school band. Rockwell received a Bachelor of Music from the Indiana University Jacob’s School of Music under the tutelage of James Campbell. He completed an Advanced Musical Studies Certificate at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music under the tutelage of Michael Rusinek. He completed his Masters of Music at the University of Texas in Austin Texas under the tutelage of Jonathan Gunn, where he served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant during the 2023-2024 school year. Rockwell will return to UT to begin his Doctorate in the Fall of 2024, where he will serve as the Associate Instructor to the clarinet studio.
